Self-publishing: When you write a novel, the dream is often to see it one day in the hands of readers.
In this article, I explain why I made this choice and how I publish my novels, from writing to sale.
1. Writing freely
First and foremost, self-publishing allows me to maintain total control over my work:
-
I choose my themes, however strange or profound they may be.
-
I maintain my style, without editorial constraints.
-
I decide when a book is ready to be published.
“Writing fantasy is often unconventional. Self-publishing allowed me to stay true to my vision.”
2. The tools I use
Here are the main steps in my process:
🧠 Writing:
-
I write the old-fashioned way: a blog and a pen
-
Several personal proofreadings
-
Reading aloud to check the rhythm
📝 Correction:
-
Thorough proofreading
🎨 Layout:
-
On Scribus
📕 Cover:
-
Created with Canva ,
-
I pay attention to the visual impact: mystery + easily identifiable genre.
3. Publication and printing
🖨️ Paper format:
-
On-demand printing via: a local printer imprim 86 in Poitiers whom I thank for their professionalism and the quality of their work.
-
4. Dissemination and communication
-
Self-publishing is also about learning how to make yourself known:
- Creating my website with Webador
- Presence on social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
- Launching my newsletter to keep my readers informed
- Participation in local book fairs and book signings
-
5. Why it's worth it
Self-publishing is demanding, but it offers:
-
Pride : each book is the result of total effort
-
Autonomy : no dependence on a reading committee
-
Proximity : reader feedback is direct and valuable
-
Far from being a plan B, self-publishing is now a strong choice for independent authors.
It requires rigor, patience… but also a lot of passion. And if you are a reader, know that every self-published novel carries within it a double adventure : that of the story, and that of the author who made it possible.
